I’m going to start from the very beginning and tell you why it is that I’ve created this website in the first place and it goes way back to when I was just 17 years old.
Inspirational and Motivational Speaker – Vistage
Now, it turns out my family has been in the business of being the president or CEO of an organization for quite some long time. I, you know, have been in that space, my brother, my father before. And in fact, it turns out there’s a network around the world of these sorts of people called “The Executive Connection” or TEC. And in America, it’s now known as Vistage.
Well, back in the day my father was actually involved in a local TEC group. And I knew that they needed every month that they got together a group of 15 or 20 CEOs each of a fairly significant company to have a resource speaker come address them on some particular topic. It’s usually in business but not always because they were very holistic so the whole life balance organization and they’re still are. In fact, I think there’s now 14-15,000 CEOs members of this network around the world.
So, anyway, I knew that to get to speak in that group of people was kind of a tricky thing. They took their pick of the best speakers from around the world. Somehow, I got in and I was speaking about the Internet.
Inspirational and Motivational Speaker – The Internet
And I remember it was kind of made up a group of grey hairs, you know, a bunch of guys in suits with the grey hair happening who were powerful CEOs. And here I was saying this new thing coming along called the Web and you can pay attention to it or not at your own peril. It’s going to happen. And I remember them kind of semi-laughing me out of the room. But the few who didn’t laugh me out of the room and took my advice and I started to work with them as a consultant who ended being head of the curve with the Internet came because come it did.
Inspirational and Motivational Speaker – Improv
So that’s really when I started working professionally as a speaker and it’s turned out to be quite a passion. It turns out I need some training out in improv-comedy. So, I’ve done a lot of sort of stand-up comedy and improve-comedy on stage. I’ve done a lot of work with children. I ended touring around Australia and then further the field around the world. I’ve spoken in Canada, across the North probably in 30 or 40 cities in North America by now and of course in Australia.
And a really interesting thing has happened. As I’ve started talking on different topics but most recently on my life summit material, is that I’ve started being built. This is a strange thing for me, started being built as one of the world’s top ten motivational and inspirational speakers. I was alongside people like Les Brown and Savannah Ross and Steve Miller and amazing other speakers recently for example. And I’ve spoken in amazing places. I’ve spoken, well, everything from your local chamber of commerce where there is a hundred people in the room to the Empowerment Summit that’s held in Toronto. I’ve spoken to Vistage and tech groups all around the place. I’ve spoken to Texas, women in business and communication with all sorts of groups of people. The E Women’s Network are all around the world.
Inspirational and Motivational Speaker – Not!
And I found myself being considered an inspirational or motivational speaker. At first, I’ve got to say it really didn’t resonate because I identify those people, no disrespect against anyone I’ve mentioned, kind of like hyped salesmen. You know, people who would get on stage and going to scream and yell until eventually you kind of get eyes like the rabbit and the headlights are kind of glazed over and you just kind of like buy some whatever it is that they’re selling. And I really, really didn’t relate to that.
In fact, I remember getting to a particular conference hearing that kind of thing going on, thinking I should probably leave. I didn’t leave by the way. I was sort of the exception to the rule in that particular time.
So, why is it that I’m considered an inspirational and motivational speaker? Well, I don’t think it’s me. I mean, I’m good at comedy. I love having people laugh. I love having people participate and I love people sort of getting informed, getting engaged, getting entertained at the same time. And I’m really addicted to that. I mean, I’ve worked with crowds of maybe 3-4,000 people at a time as a part of my speaking career.
Inspirational and Motivational Speaker – Clarity
But what I really do love and I know this sounds a little bit funny, is I love people helping people into clarity. This is really the heart of my life summit work for example. And what happens is this. When I speak, I’m a believer as much as possible “Show. Don’t tell”. In other words, I prefer to speak as little as possible and have people do as much as possible.
So, my talks are full of big pieces of paper and crazy coloured markers and pens and candy and fun and laughter and conversation and people working individually in pairs and groups. And even in an hour or two, we’ll get right into the thick of this material. So, what happens is while I’m speaking, and this is kind of “speaking meets workshop”, I guess, people start to come to clarity about their dreams, their passions, what’s possible for them in life.
And you know what? That is incredibly inspirational, incredibly motivational. And people kind of—they get that look in their face where they actually kind of want to draw breath. They want to get out of and leap out of bed in the morning and go get to some of these cool, amazing things that they now see, that have been kind of revealed to them, this kind of process.
So, why I don’t consider myself in many ways an inspirational or motivational speaker clearly the work that I do is inspirational and motivational and gets people amazing results. Actually, what’s cool about it is even just with that, even without working with me one-on-one or going through the online courses, people report extraordinary results.
Inspirational and Motivational Speaker – A Story
I was recently at a talk for a group of people who were all unemployed. There were about 200 of them in the room. And you’ve got to understand, they weren’t very happy. I was kind of—I asked them and they were kind of like 3 or 4 out 10 happy at the beginning of the talk. And by the time that we’re done, there were 8, 9, 10 out 10 happy. And so, they shifted right when we did work and they shifted. And I’ve got an email straight afterwards. It was a terrific email. It was from this women and she said, “I’ve been unemployed for 10 years. And something happened in that talk. I was inspired. I was motivated. I came to clarity. And when I did, something changed because when I got home, there was an email in my inbox asking me to attend a job interview on the following Wednesday.”
In other words, once things shifted, she was inspired. She was motivated. She was clear. Things started to shape up, to show up in the real world.
So, there you are. That’s my take on inspirational and motivational speaking and the reason I created this website to share my insights in that process and to how I work and who I work with and hopefully give you some of that inspiration and motivation that happens in the live events. But in this case, through a website where I can reach as many people that would be interested as opposed to just the people who were there in the room.
